International Kite Festival - January 2017 - Uttarayan Festival - Tourism in Ahmedabad Gujarat

The International Kite Festival, called as Uttarayan is one of the biggest festivals celebrated in Gujrat, Western state of India.  International Kite Festival is celebrated from 07 Jan to 15 Jan 2017 every year. Main event of the International Kite Event is held in Ahmedabad, Kite capital of Gujarat which attracts tourists from India as well as foreign countries. 

The festival of Uttarayan represents the day when winter going to turn into summer. It is also known as Makara Sankranti and is sign of harvest season for farmers. The festival is a time of thanksgiving for the religious and the awakening of the gods from their long slumber.
During this festival week markets are filled with huge crowd with kite buyers & sellers and competitors participating in the events.  According to history of India, the tradition of kite flying by the kings and Royalties is a sport of entertaining and a way to manifestation of their skills and power.


See Patang Bazaar, one of famous kite markets located in the heart of Ahmedabad. Patang Bazaar is opened 24 hours during the whole festive week. You can also explore a Kite Museum, located at Sanskar Kendra in Paldi area of Ahmedabad established in 1985. 

Huge number of participants, solo-travelers and vacationers from foreign countries such as Japan, Italy, UK, Canada, Brazil, Indonesia, Australia, USA, Malaysia, Singapore, France and China came here to take amusement of Kite festival.

It has many regional names such as:  
  •     Lohri in Punjab
  •     Makar Sankranti in Bihar
  •     Bihu in Assam
  •     Hadaga in Maharashtra
  •     Pongal in Tamil Nadu
